Common Questions

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine addresses the bigger picture, rather than focusing on symptoms, functional medicine addresses dysfunction in body systems.  Every body system their organs and tissues are interconnected.  When the brain is constantly carrying an allostatic load due to a chronic stress response that has gone on for months if not years other body systems begin to become compromised.  By understanding this main concept along with the history and conditions in which these issues manifested we can use very specialized lab assessments to define the dysfunction, and apply individualized protocols to begin restoring allostasis and body systems function.

How long will I have to do this for?

I have found thru years of practice that a six month protocol works optimally.  Some may go a little longer.  However the therapeutic protocols are supplemental not permanent.  Some clients like to retest at this point to verify their progress.  Typically at this point you move to a maintenance protocol to remain on a healthy program.

What is the success rate for someone who suffers from stress response imbalances?

The protocols we use have been tested and proven on thousands of patients with over thirty years of research and clinical use.  With that said, it depends on the diligence of each client in following their daily protocol and making lifestyle changes that only they can be responsible for implementing.  We are committed to assisting and empowering each client to regain their health and experience life changing results if they are committed to doing so as well.

How long does it take to see results?

Results vary by each person.  Some people experience dramatic results within days others may take a bit longer.  Our standard programs are for a minimum of six months.  It is important to remember that your body did not fail overnight.  Years of stressors and illness take their toll on the body and it takes a proper amount of time to restore.

Why does my regular doctor not know about this?

In conventional medicine doctors don't do these kind of tests.  The primary reason is because the solutions are all non medical.  There is no drug to fix these kinds of problems.  It's all a lifestyle correction and relative nutritional deficiencies that are addressed by supplementation, why, because a relative nutritional deficiency cannot be met by nutrition alone.  Conventional doctors really don't do lifestyle coaching or recommend supplements therefore they don't order these specialized tests.

What is the process to get started?

The first step is to fill out the New Patient Paperwork located in the footer section of this page and email the fillable form back to our office.  Please allow three days for Dr. Juliano to review your history prior to scheduling an initial consultation.  You may call our office 630.280.5316 or use the Book an Appointment online scheduler to make your appointment.  Please refer to Pricing and Policies for further information.  If you have any questions please feel free to call us, we will be happy to assist you.

What labs do we include in our 6 month program?

We run a very specific metabolic organic acid test and a PCR stool test.  Other labs may be suggested based on your individual situation and health challenges and the length of time you have been having issues.  Those tests are blood tests that can be ordered by yourself or through your primary doctor.

How long does it take to get the lab results?

The labs we run usually take 1-2 weeks for the results.  After Dr. Juliano evaluates the lab results you will be contacted to start your appointment scheduling.  It is at this time Dr. Juliano will design a wellness protocol for you.

Can I purchase supplements from other sources, does it make a difference?

Dr. Juliano uses professional grade supplements, which means the formulations are based on the very latest, most credible science to deliver optimal benefits for your needs.  These supplements undergo rigorous testing and monitoring.  The lines we carry has the research and science behind their product development, factors that are vital to the manufacture of the product that is superior in both quality and efficacy.  This way we can be assured of the results we are seeking for each patient that it is not a question of the quality of the supplements.  Not all supplements are the same, nor are the forms of the ingredients.  For instance there are about four different forms of folic acid, they are all different.

How does Essential Health bill their clients?

Payment is due at the time of consultation.  We accept Visa, MasterCard and Amex or personal checks.

Does Essential Health bill insurance?

Dr. Juliano feels very strongly that insurance companies should not be directing patient care by setting restrictions on testing and protocols.  Operating outside the insurance system allows us to take the time necessary to listen to you about your health concerns and goals.  It also allows us to provide you with individualized protocols based on your needs.  Bottom line, the treatment you receive should be the best care possible, it should be determined by your practitioner and you; not the insurance company.

We do not bill insurance companies.  It is up to each individual to check with their insurance provider if they cover consultations.  Per your request we will provide a superbill that lists the CPT codes and diagnostic codes for consultations and lab tests.  Most insurance companies will not reimburse for supplements.  We cannot guarantee reimbursement.

Are family discounts offered?

Couples are welcome to do a joint consultation for one hour to cover both individuals.  For children of an existing client the initial consultation is waived.  Please call the office for further details.

How long is a typical wellness plan?

Our Peak Performance Plan is a 6 month plan.  Additional time if needed will be billed monthly.

What happens when my wellness/therapeutic plan has ended?

Most people once they have invested the time and commitment to becoming well move to a simple maintenance program to maintain their health.  Most test once a year to check their body systems to stay on track and catch any minor variances before they become a major problem again.  Most importantly you remain in a healthy state both emotionally, physically and spiritually that is our goal for you.
